Albert Story

This page holds the illustration work I did from the brief of a clients story about Albert. A young boy who is afraid to go outside, and looks to the creatures of nature to overcome his fear.

Albert

This is my first sketch of the main character Albert. He is a timid boy so I made his eyes small and beady. He bears a sad maybe slightly grumpy fed up expression, but as he overcomes his fear and grows in confidence his eyes begin to open up and his cheeks grow, forming a joyess and beaming expression. Later in the story as he goes outside more exploring, he needs to wear a scarf and wooly jumper to keep warm.

The piece was painted in Acrylic on A4 mixed media paper.

Albert's Friends

This is my first sketch of Albert's friends Masie and Jack. Masie is a fiery red head, cool and confident and a bit of a tomboy. She loves rollerskating, wearing cool clothes and doing activeties outside. Albert is in awe of her confidence and to him she seems fearless, something that Albert secretly feels he could never be. Masie tries to encourage him to play outside but Albert must first beleive in himself, if he is to overcome his fear and grow in confidence. Jack is Albert's best friend, but like Masie is not afraid of playing outside. If Albert wants to play with his friends again he needs to overcome his fear of being outside. Maybe his new friends robin and parrot might be able to help him? I decided to put the letter 'M' and 'J' on the two friends to help tell them apart.

Albert's Parents

Albert's parents don't play a large role in the story but I thought I might make them exaggerated to add a bit of visual humour. Albert's dad is very tall and slim with a huge mostache that changes expression reflecting his mood, going from flicking upwards into a smile to falling downwards into a sulk. Albert's Dad is probably very stern, wise and stoic not saying very much with words at least. However, his twirling mostach and the scholarly eyes behind his glasses tell you all you need to know. Albert's mother is very short and round, an amusing contrast with her husband. She has bright blonde clurly platted hair, huge round beaming eyes and wide smiling lips. She is probably very loud and outgoing, excited and bubbly. But also very kind, friendly and nutureing. Esspecially to her son Albert, who she tries to encourage and help him to face his fear.

The Deer

This is my first sketch of the deer Albert encounters in a wood. I wanted the deer to have a similar shy and timid facial expression to Albert, as Albert see's himself in the deer and this helps him in overcoming his fear.

The Parrot

This is my first sketch of the parrot that Albert buys at the pet shop and takes home. It is was quite tricky to get the Parrot to have human expressions, but as it was one of the central characters in the story I thought that it should have a visual character of its own. A lot of the expression I thought should come from the eyes, that form different exaggerated shapes depending on the emotion he is projecting. I also wanted him to be able to smile, I tried the frontal protrait view but I think its more obvious and works better from a side view. I think in future that if I am to create similar bird characters I would have them turned to the side, so that there face can more easily emote.

Robin/ Wren

This is my first sketch of the Robin and Wren friends that Albert meets on his window sill. I first drew sketches of a real robin and wren before trying to adapt them into a more cartoony and expresionate style. I really wanted to have the animal characters have human expressions and have relateable characteristics, so that as Albert learns from these different animals from nature projecting himself onto them, it becomes obvious in a visual story telling sense. The animals expressions reflecting Alberts own feelings.

Albert flying with magic cloak

This is the illustration of Albert flying over the yorkshire countryside. His magic cloak had inexplicably transformed into a pair of parrot wings in school during class. Albert bored in class had a dream of flying away and his dream came true. It was an interesting challenge to make the cloak transform into a pair of wings, but I wanted the cloak to be what gave Albert his wings, to make the cloak do more magical things than just be a symbol for his fear.

Albert on the swing

This is an illustration of a scene where Albert is being pushed on the swing by his father. It is a very happy memory of Alberts, when he used to play outside.
